Fluorite is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride. The word fluorite comes from the Latin root fluo, meaning “to flow” because it has a relatively low melting point and was used as an important flux in smelting. Fluorite occurs in a large variety of deposits in different areas around the world. Notable deposits occur in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Norway, Mexico, and the province of Ontario in Canada. There are a number of industrial uses for fluorite—it has been used in the production of aluminum, the manufacture of enamels and cooking utensils, and to make hydrofluoric acid. It is even used as a substitute for glass in some high-performance telescopes and camera lens elements! And back in the 19th century, it was often mined for ornamental purposes.
