A common rock-forming silicate, generally colorless and ranking No. 4 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It has a variable chemical composition of potassium, magnesium, silicon, and oxygen, with water in its crytalline structure. Large, clear plates of mica where once commonly used for windows, but more often used as an insulator.
