Since forces are invisible, we must study them by observing their effects on matter. The force of magnetism, for example, affects matter in a definite and characteristic way. The space in which these effects can be measured is called the magnetic field. In a field such as this, the magnitude, or intensity, of the force and its direction can be measured by objects that are affected by it. In the case of magnetism, te objects are compasses and iron filings. Using this kit and the materials contained within, students will study a magnetic field sphere with a magnet embedded in its center, and relate their findings to the properties and function of the earth's magnetic field. The kit includes a plastic sphere (1.5" diameter) with alnico magnet embedded in the center, a 2.5" diameter petri dish, a jar of iron filings, one ceramic bar magnet, and a 1.5" diameter compass. Following the procedures outlined in the experiment guide will allow students to visualize the earth's magnetic field. Makes a great classroom or science fair experiment.
