Labradorite is a feldspar mineral native to an Island near Labrador, Canada, and it exhibits a singular iridescent optical effect known as labradorescence, which is "the peculiar reflection of the light from submicroscopical planes orientated in one direction." What this means in layman's terms is that, when the light reflects just right on the specimen, brilliant rainbow color patterns will leap from the surface, resembling the effect of an oil slick on asphalt. This particular specimen of labradorite is left partially unmodified from its rough form; only one side of the 1 inch chunk is polished to reveal clearly the effect of labradorescence, as well as the power of stone polishing. Makes an excellent gift for earth science teachers or rock/mineral enthusiasts!
