DIY Galileo Thermometer Kit

Galileo Galilei, the pioneer of modern physics and astronomy, created a simple thermometer centuries ago that uses balls filled with liquids of different density suspended in a liquid tube to visually demonstrste ambient temperature.  Although we now have more efficeint means of telling temperature, the Galileo thermometer remains one of the most visually-appealing versions thereof. 

This DIY Galileo Thermometer kit includes everything needed to build your own Galileo Thermometer, and young physicists will learn about the science behind temperature and density with a series of small experiments along the way. Students will create their own Galileo thermometer with cartesian divers of different densities to show the temperature.  Each diver will be assigned a temperature range according to its density, and rise or descend according to the ambient temperature. The diver that remains suspended in the middle of the thermometer represents the approximate temperature.  Building their own thermometer is undeniably fun, but we're all about education here; kids will learn about temperature, volume, and density as they build.  Afterwards, they'll learn how bar thermometers work, and perform kitchen magic by using their newfound knowledge!

  Good starter kit for kids

My 6 & 8 year old boys wanted to make a Galileo thermometer after seeing one recently. I don't think this kit was as precise as necessary to make it function correctly (which is fine, it's not an expensive or intricate design), but I do think it's laid out very well for your kids, so it's still a great science project for them.
