This is a polished anodized aluminum sphere which, when grounded, is used to receive the intense arc discharges from the Van de Graaff generator dome. The flexible grounding lead is 90cm long and has a banana plug at one end which connects to the base of the sphere and an alligator clip at the other end which connects to the ground post on the base of the generator.
